DeepSeek API Not Working? Fix Authentication, Billing, and Rate-Limit Errors

By Nicho

When a DeepSeek API request fails, start with the service that received it. An official DeepSeek key, a gateway key, and a coding subscription are not interchangeable. The same HTTP status can also have a different meaning on different services.

The fastest useful diagnosis combines four facts: destination hostname, model identifier, HTTP status, and the response's error message. Record those before changing configuration. This guide covers configuration and request failures using documentation checked on October 26, 2026. It is not a live outage report or a claim that a particular service is currently unavailable.

If the problem is a 402 error or a failed top-up, see DeepSeek API payment for how top-ups, refunds and balances work.

1. Confirm which API you are calling

Treat the provider, key issuer, endpoint format, and model ID as one configuration. Mixing parts from different examples creates failures that can look like a model problem.

Route OpenAI-format base URL Flash model identifier
DeepSeek direct https://api.deepseek.com deepseek-flash
cheapaimodel https://api.cheapaimodel.ai/v1 deepseek-v4-1-flash

These identifiers come from the DeepSeek quickstart and the DeepSeek V4.1 Flash model page on cheapaimodel. They describe different access routes, not proof of identical backend behavior. DeepSeek also documents an Anthropic-format endpoint; do not paste that address into a client expecting the OpenAI request format.

Check the configuration your application actually uses, not just the file you edited. A deployment variable, another project profile, or an older process can override the intended value. Restart or redeploy only as appropriate for your application, then inspect its effective provider and model settings without printing the secret key.

2. Read the status and message together

For the direct DeepSeek API, the official error reference documents these categories:

Status Direct API meaning First check
400 Malformed request Body structure and JSON format
401 Authentication failure Key and destination
402 Insufficient balance Direct account balance
422 Invalid parameters Names, types, and supported values
429 Rate or concurrency limit Request pacing and active work
500 Server error Bounded retry, then investigate persistence
503 Server overload Wait before a bounded retry

This table is not a universal gateway error dictionary. For example, cheapaimodel's billing FAQ says it returns 403 when the prepaid balance runs out. Read that gateway's response rather than interpreting every 403 as a bad password or every balance problem as a DeepSeek 402.

3. Separate authentication from account access

For an authentication failure, check that the key was issued by the endpoint's provider and is still active. Look for accidental surrounding spaces, a missing environment variable, or a variable name that differs between local and deployed environments.

Do not reveal the key in screenshots or logs to prove it exists. Record a non-secret key label or the configuration variable's name instead. If a credential was exposed, follow the provider's revocation and replacement process before continuing.

For a balance or access error, open the account belonging to the route being called. Funding one provider does not fund another. Check any applicable key-level restrictions as well as the account balance. cheapaimodel documents per-key budgets, expiry, model allowlists, and IP allowlists; a restriction deserves its own investigation rather than an automatic top-up.

Avoid buying more credit as your first debugging action when the response points to an invalid key, request parameter, or destination.

4. Reduce the request to a minimal case

If authentication succeeds but the request is rejected, temporarily remove application complexity. Start from the selected provider's current documented example with a short, non-sensitive text prompt and a supported model. Leave out tools, images, custom response formats, optional reasoning settings, and long conversation history until the basic path works.

Then add one feature at a time. If a plain request succeeds and the tool-enabled request fails, the difference is more informative than repeatedly resending the full production payload.

Check these common sources of mismatch:

  • The model value is a marketing display name rather than an API identifier.
  • The SDK appends a path that is already included in your configured URL.
  • A copied parameter belongs to another provider or endpoint format.
  • A field has the wrong type, such as a string where a number or object is expected.
  • The requested context or output exceeds the applicable model or route limit.

Use the error response and the current provider documentation to decide which case applies. Removing every option permanently is not a substitute for understanding which required feature was incompatible.

5. Diagnose 429 errors before adding retries

DeepSeek's rate-limit documentation defines concurrency at the account level. A request remains active until its response finishes, and using another key in the same account does not create an independent allowance.

That means a workload can become limited when requests take longer, even if the number started each second has not changed. Inspect active requests, queue size, completion time, and whether several application workers are sharing the same account.

Reduce parallel work, apply a bounded delay with jitter, and obey a retry delay if the service provides one. Limit both attempts and total waiting time. Ensure only one layer owns retries: an SDK retry loop multiplied by an application retry loop can worsen the overload.

Do not repeatedly retry invalid credentials or malformed requests. Those need a configuration change, not more traffic.

6. Treat a timeout as an uncertain outcome

A client timeout does not prove that the server never processed the request. Before repeating expensive work, inspect any available request record or usage log. A response may have been produced after your client stopped waiting.

Streaming failures need similar care. Record whether the connection opened, whether any events arrived, and whether your client saw the expected completion signal. A partially displayed answer is not automatically a successful complete response.

If the model drives external actions, keep those actions separate from retrying generation. An application should not repeat a payment, notification, or other side effect merely because it lost the final response.

7. Escalate with a safe reproduction

If the problem persists, prepare a concise report for the provider: UTC timestamp, endpoint hostname, model ID, status, sanitized error message, request identifier if available, SDK version, and the smallest reproducible payload without private data.

Describe whether it fails consistently, only under concurrency, or only with one feature. Include changes that preceded the failure. Never attach raw authorization headers or customer prompts just to make the report more complete.

Once the request works, return to your actual workload gradually and inspect its billed usage. Our DeepSeek pricing guide explains the cost categories; the developer documentation is the starting point for gateway-specific configuration. Fix the diagnosed cause before deciding whether a different model or provider is necessary.
